Why I started Evergreen Gaming
Why launch another gaming publication in 2026? This article explores the philosophy behind Evergreen Gaming, a long-term project dedicated to intentional media consumption, thoughtful discussion, and genuine community.
Evergreen Gaming (E.G.G.) comes as a result of my everlasting need to create content around the media I consume. As someone who is passionate about way too many nerdy hobbies I always felt the need to share my feeling and express my thoughts on everything to engage with as much people as I can.
Wether it be games, movies, shows or anything else there was never a platform where I truly felt I could encapsulate all my interests into one big thing. Evergreen Gaming aims to be exactly that.
The downfall of youtube as a personal motivator
Before even sketching the idea for E.G.G. I spent over 5 years creating youtube content seriously going by the names of TheRetroDen and most recently ByGilYoutube. As time passed I fulfilled my goal of becoming monetized (Feb. 2023) and amassed a total of 3,280 subscribers and 850,000 views, met a ton of wonderful people and got to spread passion for a lot of games online. That being said, the recent direction the platform has taken no longer makes it sustainable nor enticing for me to pursue video creation as my main creative endeavor. The shift towards AI centered tools and content made me feel like YouTube has completely lost the personality driven aspect that led me to even join the platform in the first place over 12 years ago. Over the years the platform has become increasingly creator hostile, utilizing tactics that discourage the user from experimentation into repetition through the constant reminder of failure once a video underperforms.
All this being mentioned, the event that started my pivot into writing was the 2025 change in how views were counted on the platform.

The main factor was not how I was getting less views or engagement, it was moreso the fact that the platform kept pushing increasingly impactful changes without communicating whatsoever with the creators that fuel the endless content machine, resulting in an aimless collective desperation felt by an entire platform.
What is intentional gaming and why the focus on it?
Intentional gaming is a concept that was first introduced to me through the youtuber BBKDRAGOON and his series on the respective topic. To put it bluntly, intentional gaming is all about being more mindful of your choices and how you interact with gaming in general. The ambiguity of intentionality was what made me attracted to it, the point of intentional gaming is that it's not something that has a ruleset attached to it, it's a mindset to be adopted by you to work on yourself, to be more mindful of how you consume media and to spend your time as best as you can without overly optimizing it.
In the past few years becoming more of an intentional gamer made me realize the toxic relationship I had been slowly creating with the hobbies I most loved while growing up and how I needed to take a step back, rethink my approach to it all and make more healthy decisions that would create healthy habits, not only for gaming, but for the rest of my life.
Why does thoughtful media discussion matter?
More and more, it feels like all of us are drifting away from the "jangling keys" aspects of modern social media. Short-form content has slowly been frying our brains, and producing thoughtful media discussion is how I choose to push back against that trend.
By writing articles instead of producing videos, I aim to ensure that everything published on Evergreen Gaming is intentional and carries a distinct personality. In doing so, I hope to respect both the writer and the reader, creating a space where ideas can be explored with care rather than rushed for engagement.
In an internet where everything seems to be either clickbait or ragebait, I'm trying to cultivate an interest in research, reflection, and deep engagement with specific topics. That can only be achieved through carefully curating what is published, ensuring that every article offers value and invites discussion rather than simply adding to the endless stream of digital clutter.
What I hope Evergreen Gaming Becomes
Evergreen Gaming is a long-term project.
The goal is not for it to become a full-time business or a revenue generator. Instead, the aim is to build a community of like-minded people who are passionate about games, media, and thoughtful discussion.
I want to look back on this project in ten years and be proud of the articles I've written, the conversations they've sparked, and the people I've had the opportunity to connect with along the way.
More importantly, I want Evergreen Gaming to become a place where people with different perspectives can come together and share what they are passionate about. By bringing together contributors with unique interests and experiences, I hope to create a corner of the internet where discussion feels genuine, thoughtful, and human.
A place built not around trends, algorithms, or engagement metrics, but around curiosity, reflection, and a shared appreciation for the media that stays with us long after the experience ends.
